Concept: A Visitor Center for independents

on

One of the downsides of typical coworking spaces is their barrier to entry. With the exception of free promotional spaces like Wix Lounge, even the most flexible of spaces offer at best a $35+ Day Pass. For the average independent, this is too much to stomach for just a day of work.

What would it look like, then, to develop a space that offered free or very inexpensive space for people to access basic information and resources, meet up with others, and generally get connected?

This space would be part of something larger; perhaps a shared workspace with paid options for people who want to set up shop. Perhaps it’s part of the corporate offices of a company that serves the kinds of folks who’d be rolling through.

In any case, it would offset the cost of the space through related revenue streams.

Seats2Meet locations in Europe, for example, offer free workspace surrounded by paid conference room space. Their software facilitates social connections while also making it easy for people to book the rooms. The numbers work.

In San Francisco, Workshop Cafe offers an affordable hourly rate for use of a space that’s designed to put it square in the middle between a cafe and traditional workspace. Like Seats2Meet, software makes the whole process easy.

New Work City has always aspired to play the role of Visitors Center. Folks from around the world have stopped into New Work City to work, attend events, and join for happy hours. While we’ve played this role well enough simply by being as open and accessible as possible, what would it look like to take this concept further?
