How to make your membership the awesomest thing that’s ever happened to you

So much good has come from the connections people have made at New Work City. Exactly how and when it happens always involves a bit of serendipitous magic, so approach your new membership with an open mind! Here are a couple of the best ways to give yourself opportunities for great things to happen:

  • Say hello to strangers! When you’re at New Work City, you should feel free to say hello to other people. While you should be respectful of people when they’re focused on working, don’t be afraid to share who you are and ask people about themselves.
  • Speak up in our discussion group! Outside of our physical space, it’s the best place to really connect with the community and make full use of its potential. Post questions, ideas, opportunities, and anything else you might want to share. Feel free to introduce yourself! You should be receiving a notification of your being added to this group shortly after signing up.
  • Attend an upcoming gathering in the space. Let us know if you want to present at an upcoming Show & Tell, and feel free to bring friends to the next happy hour!
  • Organize something. Make your voice heard. If you have something to share and want to get members involved, go for it! We're here to help each other advance ourselves. Put yourself out there! Either toss the idea out in the discussion group or fill out our Event Application!

How this whole thing works

We pull off something pretty remarkable every day here. On any given day, anyone can walk in off the street and disrupt things here, yet it never happens. That’s the case because we have spent years building a strong culture of mutual respect and support. As a member of New Work City, we are entrusting you, along with everyone else, with to maintain the culture that makes us love being here so much. To that end, we ask three core things of everyone:

  • Respect yourself.
  • Respect others.
  • Respect the space.

If you find yourself wondering what’s allowed or permissible in the space, ask yourself whether what you're doing is in line with all of the above values. In particular, there are a few key things to be mindful of sharing responsibly (and to hold others accountable for sharing responsibly as well):

  • Share Internet responsibly
    • We work hard to ensure the internet is rock solid and always speedy. Let's be kind to each other by going easy giant file uploads and any other notoriously bandwidth-hogging activities, please!
  • Share conference rooms responsibly
    • If you need a room for more than two hours at a time, ask first!
  • Print freely, but be reasonable
    • We don’t charge for printing. If you need to print a lot of stuff, though, talk to us first!
  • Be as tidy as you’d like everyone else to be.
    • If you turn into a tasmanian devil when in the restroom, take a moment to spiff up the place after you return to human form.
Generally speaking, if a voice in your head is telling you that you might be doing something wrong, listen to it! In particular, be mindful of the resources which are limited and must be shared responsibly to work well for everyone.

Handy things to know about the space

  • Internet:
    • We have three wireless networks and ethernet access throughout the space. We have one main connection, as well as two backup connections. Make sure you connect to the correct network to get the fastest speeds!
      • SSID: nwc.co
      • Password: c0ncert0 (those are zeroes!)
  • Backup Internet:
    • We have two backup networks which run on a completely separate ISP and network infrastructure in case our main network fails for any reason. While these networks are great, they are NOT as fast as our main connection, so only use them if you really need to!
      • SSID: NWCFRONT-1 or NWCBACK-1
      • Password: c0ncert0 (those are zeroes!)
  • Print/fax/scan/copy:
    • We’ve got printers towards the front and back of the space which you can use, free of charge. They do fancy things like print attached PDFs you email to them, and scan to Google Docs. Check them out for more details!
  • Conference rooms:
    • Our rooms are intended to be used for occasional phone calls and meetings. If you have a consistent need to be on the phone a lot, or take a lot of in-person meetings, we can work with you to ensure that your work doesn’t have too big of an impact on our limited private spaces.
      • Book our large conference room online by claiming a time slot in advance.
      • Book one of our mid-sized meeting rooms by adding your name to an available time slot on the window outside that room.
  • Lockers:
    • Citizen members may claim a locker. Talk to us about how to do this by emailing us at hello@nwc.co or by stopping at the front desk!
  • Mail:
    • Citizen members can have mail sent here.
    • We keep the mail up by the front desk.
    • If you’re going to have stuff sent here under a business name or other alias, give us a heads up so we know what belongs to whom!

We’re a tiny community in a big city, but we’re proud of the impact we’ve had over the past 5+ years in NYC and around the world. We’re built by and for our members-- we don’t answer to anyone but each other. Thanks for being a part of our community. Let’s do awesome things together!

Cheers,
Veronica, Tony, and Peter

PS - Some advice from members:

Talk to the people you run into in the kitchen! And use the gmail group! It's full of awesome, friendly, helpful, knowledgable people! Also, if you're really new, sitting at a table in the hallway is good for getting to know the other people around you, but if you really need to focus, show up early and sit in the back with some headphones on.
-Clarice

Make yourself comfortable and get to work. Also, book 10 or 15 minutes in your day to meet people and learn more about New Work City, who’s here and how we roll. This is a rich welcoming environment.
-Doug

In the end the love you take is equal to the love you make.
