Jerry Rudisin, CEO and President of Schooner Information Technology, joined Schooner in 2009. From 2003 to 2008 he was CEO of Agitar Software, which developed a Java unit-testing solution sold to over 250 customers worldwide that improved the quality and economics of software development. From 1999 to 2003 Jerry was CEO of NightFire Software, which developed service-management software for telecom carriers. From 1991 to 1999 Jerry led marketing at Rational Software (now IBM Rational), joining when it was an 11-year-old private company with revenue of $28 million and leaving when it was a public company with revenue of $412 million and a $3.2 billion market cap. He was responsible for product and corporate marketing, sales support, and the marketing aspects of three public-company acquisitions and two stock offerings. Previously he was VP of marketing and customer support, product manager, and software architect / development manager at startups in Boston and Pittsburgh. Jerry earned an M.S. in computer science from UCLA and a B.S. in electrical engineering and computer science from MIT.

Thinking Like A Programmer – Coding For People Who’ve Never Coded

Anyone and everyone can write their own programs! If you’ve ever cooked following a recipe, you can program. If you’ve ever solved a puzzle, you can program. If you’ve ever played a game – you can program! Learn the basic concepts of computers, information processing, and modern programming languages from a pro and empower yourself with a set of problem solving tools you can apply to any situation. Students at all skill levels are welcome, though beginners will benefit most from this study. No experience is required other than a strong desire to learn how to program.
Students will walk out of this workshop having learned many of the fundamental concepts of modern programming languages, will gain a basic working knowledge of the Python programming language, and will take with them the mental framework needed to approach problems logically and atomically. Please note that this class is not about “building web sites” or using HTML or other markup languages; if you’re familiar with the term, Python is best described as a “back end” technology.
You must bring a laptop – Mac and Mac OS 10.4 or greater preferred, because they already come pre-installed with all the tools you need to get started programming immediately. Step by step instructions will be provided prior to class to help you get your laptop ready for programming if you don’t have a Mac.

Throughout colleges and in development teams around the world, software developers are explicitly and implicitly taught a number of database principles: Normalization, avoid duplicating data storage, don’t over-constrain your queries, and many others. In high scale web applications dealing with billions of requests, there are a number of these “rules” that commonly have to be broken. Bazaarvoice has over a terabyte of data in MySQL instances, and serves over a billion requests per month, however, as the Bazaarvoice backend scaled to this size, the team recognized a number of compromises made along the way and documented them in this presentation.
If you’re worried about your application’s scalability, or how to handle the onslaught of traffic when your new site launches, this presentation will give you some great techniques to consider and will introduce you to Engineers who’ve done this before. You’ll hear us talk about which of these compromises paid off, and which we still regret. In addition to scaling on MySQL, we’ll also talk briefly about other datastores we’ve used in conjunction with MySQL, when just an RDBMS wasn’t enough.
Scott Bonneau is the VP of Engineering at Bazaarvoice, He is an experienced engineering manager with a proven track record of delivering Google-scale projects and building and organizing world-class engineering teams. Scott has proven himself as a team leader with excellent individual management and mentoring abilities, and as a systems architect who is not afraid to roll up the sleeves and crank out code when need be. Since joining Bazaarvoice he has been instrumental in the formation of the Data team, whose sole focus has been to create and maintain a datastore capable of managing terabytes of data and billions of requests per month.
RC Johnson is the New York City Development Manager at Bazaarvoice, Originally starting as a Senior Software Engineer, RC has been a part of the myriad of changes the backend systems have gone through over the last four plus years of exponential growth. With his recent background in technology, RC is now leading the creation of a New York based Bazaarvoice Engineering team working on complex problems and large datasets.
