SchoonerSQL: 5 9s availability from MySQL and InnoDB
http://www.meetup.com/mysqlnyc/events/47331042
Thu. Jan. 26, 6:45pm – NYC http://www.DatabaseMonth.com
Jerry Rudisin, CEO and President of Schooner Information Technology
MySQL and its standard InnoDB storage engine are widely popular for good reason. But using MySQL in the most demanding mission-critical applications has been tough because MySQL has poor built-in support for high availability. Schooner has taken a breakthrough approach to create SchoonerSQL&trade: a full distribution of MySQL and InnoDB which offers 99.999% availability, high performance, radically simplified cluster administration, and a lower total cost of ownership than any SQL database – including MySQL community edition. In this talk Schooner CEO Jerry Rudisin will describe SchoonerSQL in detail including its support for high-speed multi-threaded full synchronous replication across a LAN; high-speed multi-threaded asynchronous replication across a WAN; automated immediate failover across LAN or WAN; and the simplifications in admin through the SchoonerSQL GUI.
Learn why SchoonerSQL can guarantee no lost or stale data and how it eliminates the tedious error-prone manual steps usually required for failover and recovery using MySQL. And learn why SchoonerSQL’s throughput with replication is 3x to 4x faster than MySQL Enterprise Edition or MySQL Cluster, all while using standard InnoDB. SchoonerSQL runs on standard x86 Dell, HP and IBM Red Hat Linux or CentOS servers, and can be downloaded from the Schooner web site.
Jerry Rudisin, CEO and President of Schooner Information Technology, joined Schooner in 2009. From 2003 to 2008 he was CEO of Agitar Software, which developed a Java unit-testing solution sold to over 250 customers worldwide that improved the quality and economics of software development. From 1999 to 2003 Jerry was CEO of NightFire Software, which developed service-management software for telecom carriers. From 1991 to 1999 Jerry led marketing at Rational Software (now IBM Rational), joining when it was an 11-year-old private company with revenue of $28 million and leaving when it was a public company with revenue of $412 million and a $3.2 billion market cap. He was responsible for product and corporate marketing, sales support, and the marketing aspects of three public-company acquisitions and two stock offerings. Previously he was VP of marketing and customer support, product manager, and software architect / development manager at startups in Boston and Pittsburgh. Jerry earned an M.S. in computer science from UCLA and a B.S. in electrical engineering and computer science from MIT.

Welcome to Reboot Workshop Live outside the 9 – 5
The workplace is drastically changing. A December survey showed that a whopping 84% of people planned on leaving their job in 2012, up from 60% just two years ago. Some will look for more pay. Others will look for a better opportunity. But a growing number of passionate workers will strike out on their own, abandoning the safe corporate life to pursue a side project or dream that has been burning inside them.
Living outside of a 9 – 5 workday is like a dream to some but comes with its set of challenges. Reboot Workshop is a day-long, unconference built in a hybrid format for startups, freelancers and business owners (and those aspiring to be) who face these unique challenges every day.
See ignite-style presentations in areas like accounting, health and well-being, marketing, brand identity, bookkeeping, law, social enterprise and education. Work with experts in camp-style breakout sessions. Network with those in your field as well as those in complementing fields. Be a mentor and inspiration for others.
Are you working in a full-time job you hate?
Do you have a great business idea inside that you’ve been dying to test?
Already a freelancer, independent or startup but having difficulty balancing your workload?
Trying to find that key designer or developer to bring your idea to life?
Are you ready to start an independent business?
Don’t wait… reboot your life in 2012.
Thinking Like A Programmer – Coding For People Who’ve Never Coded
Register
Anyone and everyone can write their own programs! If you’ve ever cooked following a recipe, you can program. If you’ve ever solved a puzzle, you can program. If you’ve ever played a game – you can program! Learn the basic concepts of computers, information processing, and modern programming languages from a pro and empower yourself with a set of problem solving tools you can apply to any situation. Students at all skill levels are welcome, though beginners will benefit most from this study. No experience is required other than a strong desire to learn how to program.
Students will walk out of this workshop having learned many of the fundamental concepts of modern programming languages, will gain a basic working knowledge of the Python programming language, and will take with them the mental framework needed to approach problems logically and atomically. Please note that this class is not about “building web sites” or using HTML or other markup languages; if you’re familiar with the term, Python is best described as a “back end” technology.
You must bring a laptop – Mac and Mac OS 10.4 or greater preferred, because they already come pre-installed with all the tools you need to get started programming immediately. Step by step instructions will be provided prior to class to help you get your laptop ready for programming if you don’t have a Mac.
How to Scale Big on MySQL? Break a Few Rules!
http://www.meetup.com/mysqlnyc/events/49135352″
Tue. Jan. 30, 6:45pm – NYC
Scott Bonneau, Vice President of Engineering for Bazaarvoice
Throughout colleges and in development teams around the world, software developers are explicitly and implicitly taught a number of database principles: Normalization, avoid duplicating data storage, don’t over-constrain your queries, and many others. In high scale web applications dealing with billions of requests, there are a number of these “rules” that commonly have to be broken. Bazaarvoice has over a terabyte of data in MySQL instances, and serves over a billion requests per month, however, as the Bazaarvoice backend scaled to this size, the team recognized a number of compromises made along the way and documented them in this presentation.
If you’re worried about your application’s scalability, or how to handle the onslaught of traffic when your new site launches, this presentation will give you some great techniques to consider and will introduce you to Engineers who’ve done this before. You’ll hear us talk about which of these compromises paid off, and which we still regret. In addition to scaling on MySQL, we’ll also talk briefly about other datastores we’ve used in conjunction with MySQL, when just an RDBMS wasn’t enough.
Scott Bonneau is the VP of Engineering at Bazaarvoice, He is an experienced engineering manager with a proven track record of delivering Google-scale projects and building and organizing world-class engineering teams. Scott has proven himself as a team leader with excellent individual management and mentoring abilities, and as a systems architect who is not afraid to roll up the sleeves and crank out code when need be. Since joining Bazaarvoice he has been instrumental in the formation of the Data team, whose sole focus has been to create and maintain a datastore capable of managing terabytes of data and billions of requests per month.
RC Johnson is the New York City Development Manager at Bazaarvoice, Originally starting as a Senior Software Engineer, RC has been a part of the myriad of changes the backend systems have gone through over the last four plus years of exponential growth. With his recent background in technology, RC is now leading the creation of a New York based Bazaarvoice Engineering team working on complex problems and large datasets.
Book^2 (pronounced “Book Squared”) Camp is a free series of meetings in New York City and elsewhere where the brightest minds in Publishing and Technology discuss and problem-solve what the next incarnation of the book will be.
There will be as many different points of view and out-of-the-box thinkers in the same room as we can fit in with the blessing of the fire brigade.
We’ll meet in small groups and have collaborative, conversational meetings on everything from eReaders, eBook formatting, interesting paper book projects, digital rights management (or not), social reading, metadata, reading upside down on the moon with robot zombies and anything else we can think of.
All we ask is that everyone who attends actually, earnestly and humbly wants to contribute to and learn from an open, collective, cooperative brain trust on “book next”. We’re all in this together. There are no wrong answers. Will you join us? Let’s figure it out.
